American Indian, Native American, First Nations

The terms American Indians, Native Americans, and First Nations refer to the descendants of indigenous people who inhabited the North American continent for centuries before the arrival of European settlers. They were organized into tribes and nations. Today there are over 560 federally recognized indigenous groups in the United States.  They each maintain long-held cultural practices that are influenced by regional, geographical and socio-economic indicators that vary among them, and the cultural practices of these groups cannot be stereotyped into any one mold(LaFromboise, 1988; Reynolds et al, 2006; Urban Indian Health Commission, 2007Yurkovich & Lattergrass, 2008US Census, 2007).
